The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Davao Region is investigating the alleged destruction of mangrove seedlings in Purok Tabok, Barangay Matina Aplaya, Davao City.

The incident occurred on October 3, the DENR said.

Initial findings showed that 117 planted mangrove seedlings had been affected and appeared to have been intentionally smashed and damaged.

However, the DENR said the circumstances surrounding the incident, including its cause and who may be responsible, remain subject to verification and further investigation.

The agency said it is assessing the extent of the damage and gathering additional evidence.

“Appropriate legal and administrative actions in accordance with existing environmental laws and regulations will be subsequently pursued,” the DENR Davao Region said.

Data from the DENR showed that the Philippines has 311,400 hectares of mangrove cover, of which 109,325.27 hectares are within areas covered by the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS).— MCG, GMA News
