FG’s 30-day petrol discount sparks opposition backlash
The Federal Government’s decision to offer discounted petrol for 30 days has triggered criticism from opposition figures and groups, who described the measure as inadequate and politically motivated.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the Obidient Movement, the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the presidential campaign organisation of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde rejected the intervention, with some questioning its sustainability and timing ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Presidency, however, said the initiative was not a return to fuel subsidy, explaining that NNPC Limited would temporarily forgo its retail profit margin and sell petrol at cost, particularly to public transport operators. The government also announced other measures aimed at cushioning the impact of rising fuel prices and transport costs.

Ondo crash: Air chief pleads for patience as investigation begins
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has appealed for patience as the Nigerian Air Force begins a thorough investigation into the crash of its ATR 42 aircraft, NAF 931, in Igbokoda, Ondo State, which killed all 25 people on board.
Aneke, who led senior NAF officials to the crash site, said all relevant evidence would be secured, documented and examined before any conclusion was reached on the cause of the accident. He also cautioned against speculation while recovery operations continued.
The Air Force said the crash site remained secured and that recovered items were being preserved to support the investigation. Aneke also commended the Ondo State Government, local residents and security and emergency agencies involved in the recovery operation.

The victims, who were travelling from Oyo State to orientation camps in Abia State, were rescued by security agencies along the Owerri-Onitsha road. Twenty of the 30 prospective corps members were abducted, while the remaining 10 escaped through the bush.

AI tools will help detect pregnancy complications early — Gates Foundation director
The Gates Foundation and MTN Group Foundation are partnering to deploy AI and digital tools to improve maternal healthcare and help detect pregnancy complications early in Nigeria.
Gates Foundation Nigeria Country Director, Uche Amaonwu, said the initiative would provide digital tools to 500,000 women, 5,000 health workers and 500 primary healthcare facilities. The technology will allow women to access reliable maternal health information in local languages and help health workers make quicker decisions when complications arise.
The partnership comes with a $25m investment from 2026 to 2030, shared equally by the two organisations. The pilot will also provide affordable devices and connectivity while testing AI applications designed to offer accurate and responsible health guidance before the intervention is scaled up.
