ILOILO CITY, Philippines — Dangerous heat index levels of up to 43 degrees Celsius are expected to persist in parts of Iloilo province on Thursday and Friday this week (Nov. 5 and 6), raising the risk of heat exhaustion and potentially fatal heat stroke, particularly among people exposed to prolonged outdoor heat.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), in its bulletin issued at 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, warned that the heat index in Iloilo City would remain at 42°C on Thursday and Friday, while Dumangas town could experience an even higher level, at 43°C, on Friday.

Both areas already registered a dangerous heat index of 42°C on Wednesday, marking three consecutive days of dangerous conditions if the forecasts materialize.

The heat index in Dumangas had reached 43°C on Nov. 3, while Iloilo City recorded the same level that day.

Under Pagasa’s classification, a heat index of 42°C to 51°C falls under the danger category, in which heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, while heat stroke becomes probable with continued exposure or strenuous physical activity.

The continuing dangerous heat index levels pose particular risks to outdoor workers, commuters, students, athletes, older persons, young children, and individuals with underlying medical conditions.

Pagasa’s latest forecast showed that Dumangas would remain at 42°C on Thursday before rising to 43°C on Friday. Iloilo City, meanwhile, is expected to sustain a 42°C heat index on both days.

In Capiz, Roxas City is forecast to register 39°C on November 5 and 6, while Mambusao is expected to experience 38°C on both days.

Although below the danger threshold, these readings fall under the extreme caution category of 33°C to 41°C, where heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible, especially with prolonged exposure and physical activity.

Pagasa noted that its maximum daily heat index bulletins, normally issued during the hot and dry season, continue to provide guidance because of the prevailing El Niño conditions.
