International movies are taking over the domestic box office this weekend, with Japan's Godzilla Minus Zero and India's Ramayana: Rise of a Legend taking the first and second spots on Thursday. Godzilla Minus Zero is eying a record-breaking opening-weekend haul on the back of excellent reviews, stomping out competition from this week's major new American offering, The Cat in the Hat. The Roald Dahl adaptation looks set to become Warner Bros.' latest box-office disappointment in a year the studio would like to forget.
Featuring Bill Hader as the voice of the titular character, The Cat in the Hat is projected to gross between $15 million and $20 million in its first weekend, against a reported budget of more than $90 million. Meanwhile, A24's word-of-mouth sensation — the three-hour documentary feature You Can See Everything — is looking to add around $9 million this weekend, taking its running total to approximately $80 million. At this stage, a $100 million-plus haul is all but guaranteed for the controversial film.
Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is expected to gross around $7 million over the weekend, with its total haul increasing to around $9 million over four days. The mythological epic, which is notable for being India's most expensive movie ever, grossed $3.5 million in Thursday previews. Meanwhile, Martin McDonagh's acclaimed dark comedy Wild Horse Nine, starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, is looking to gross around $5 million this weekend.

Here's How Much 'Godzilla Minus Zero' Has Grossed at the Box Office
The number-one spot, of course, was claimed by Godzilla Minus Zero. The movie serves as the direct sequel to 2023's Godzilla Minus One, which rode a wave of positive buzz to break box-office records and earn an Oscar. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One grossed more than $55 million in North America and beat out mega-budget behemoths to win the Best Visual Effects Oscar. It now holds a phenomenal 99% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
Godzilla Minus One grossed $11 million in its domestic debut, and ultimately ended its run with around $115 million worldwide against a reported budget of $10 million. Also directed by Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus Zero is projected to triple its predecessor's opening-weekend haul with a $33 million domestic debut, against a reported budget of $15 million. This is higher than the pandemic-affected $32 million debut haul of Legendary's Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, and the biggest-ever debut haul for an international title. Like its predecessor, Godzilla Minus Zero has received widespread acclaim and is now sitting at a "Certified Fresh" 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie grossed around $13 million over five days in Japan. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
