Cher is taking a moment to pay tribute to Bob Mackie following his death at age 87, as are other superstars who’ve worn some of his showstopping designs over the years.
In a Monday (Sept. 14) post on X, the multi-hyphenate — many of whose most iconic looks were crafted by Mackie — wrote that her “dear Bob has gone up to heaven.”
“Knowing him, he’s bringing Sequins, Beads, & his sketch pad,” she continued. “Good nite sweet Prince.”
The news of Mackie’s death came via a post on his Instagram profile, which reads, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today.”
“He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do,” it continued. “His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”
According to the Associated Press, Mackie’s publicist confirmed that his cause of death was pneumonia.
Though Cher was one of Mackie’s longest-running partnerships, his famous, pop-culture-making designs were also modeled by Madonna, Carol Burnett, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Zendaya, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift over the decades. Sabrina Carpenter, who wore his pieces for several of her performances, shared the announcement of his death on her Instagram Story and wrote that she was “terribly devastated.”
“I feel so lucky to have met Bob,” the “Manchild” singer continued. “His one of a kind creations have inspired and brought so much happiness and confidence to my world and they will continue to always x Mackie girl forever.”
Pink, who also modeled Mackie’s designs for a number of shows and red carpets, wrote on Instagram that she was “gutted to learn that one of [her] heroes has passed on.”
“Bob Mackie, the one and only, the legend,” she continued. “I was so lucky to be dressed by him for so long. He was loving, wickedly funny and an absolute genius. He was one of one. He will be dearly missed and my heart goes out to Joe, and his entire family and all of his loved ones. There are going to be some fabulously dressed angels.”
