Danny Jordaan beats Sandile Zungu to retain SAFA presidency

The election brought an end to weeks of campaigning, with Zungu challenging the long serving SAFA president for the organisation’s top position.

SAFA has now officially confirmed the outcome of the SAFA Elective Congress, with Jordaan securing a clear majority of the votes.

HOW MANY VOTES DID DANNY JORDAAN GET?

According to SAFA, Jordaan received 157 votes, while Sandile Zungu finished with 82 votes.

The association announced the result on its social media platforms, stating: “Dr Danny Jordaan 157 votes. Sandile Zungu 82 votes.”

SAFA then confirmed the outcome with a simple statement: “Dr Jordaan is re-elected as the SAFA President.”

The result means Danny Jordaan will continue leading South African football after defeating the challenge from Sandile Zungu.

WHAT DOES JORDAAN’S VICTORY MEAN FOR SAFA?

Jordaan’s victory comes at an important time for SAFA, with the organisation facing continued scrutiny over its governance and administration.

The election campaign also saw growing calls for change within the association, while Jordaan’s supporters backed his experience and continued leadership.

Despite the challenge from Zungu, the delegates have ultimately voted to keep Danny Jordaan in charge of SAFA.

The result gives Jordaan another mandate to lead South African football as SAFA prepares for the next chapter under his leadership.

The Federation has had six presidents since the unified association was formed on 8 December 1991.

Here is the full list of presidents in chronological order:

• Mluleki George (1991 to 1992): George served as the interim chairman and first leader of the unified association following the merger of South Africa’s historically divided football structures.
• Prof. Lesole Gadinabokao (1992 to 1994): Gadinabokao became the second president of the newly unified FA.
• Solomon “Stix” Morewa (1994 to 1997): Morewa served as executive president before resigning in early 1997.
• Dr. Molefi Oliphant (1997 to 2009): Oliphant led for more than a decade and currently holds the position of Honorary Life President.
• Kirsten Nematandani (2009 to 2013): Nematandani was elected unopposed in 2009 and served a single four year term.
• Dr. Danny Jordaan (2013 to present): Jordaan became the sixth president of SAFA in 2013 and has now retained the presidency after winning the latest election.
