Indonesia pushes for fairer copyright royalties in digital economy

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - Indonesian Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas highlighted the role of digital transformation in strengthening the creative economy as a driver of innovation, culture, and community development, beyond creating new economic opportunities.
He noted that, over the past two decades, advances in digital technology have transformed how creative works are produced, distributed, and enjoyed by the public.
"Digital platforms, streaming services, and emerging technologies have given creators broader reach to connect with audiences worldwide," Supratman said during the Global Dialogue on Cross-Border Copyright Royalty Governance in the Digital Era in Badung District, Bali, on Wednesday.
He noted that, amid the advancements, the world is also facing challenges in ensuring that the copyright ecosystem can operate fairly, transparently, and sustainably.
Today, the minister added, creative works can spread across borders in seconds, yet protection and management systems remain confined to regional regulatory frameworks and local mechanisms.
Differences in systems, limited information exchange, and the need to build the capacity of copyright management organizations represent shared challenges that require a collaborative response, he said.
Supratman emphasized that closer cooperation among governments, creators, rights holders, collective management organizations, industry players, and other stakeholders is vital to building a copyright ecosystem that keeps pace with technological advancements.
With improved governance, he said, countries can ensure that technological progress benefits users while fairly compensating creators and creative industry professionals worldwide.
He affirmed that through the Global Dialogue on Cross-Border Copyright Royalty Governance in the Digital Era, Indonesia aims to contribute to building a sustainable and structured dialogue based on shared experiences.
"Our goal is to ensure that creators and other rights holders receive fair benefits from the development of the digital economy through a transparent, accountable, and open copyright ecosystem," he said.
The Bali forum addresses three key issues: transparency, accountability, and system interoperability. Transparency relates to the information received by rights holders. Accountability concerns responsibility at every stage of royalty management, while interoperability focuses on the ability of various systems to exchange information reliably.
