The White Ash Universe is perfect for fans of dark fantasy shows such as Supernatural, and it is coming soon to IDW.

The White Ash Universe, published by White Ash Comics, is perfect for fans of Supernatural, and will soon be joining IDW Publishing. One of the preeminent publishers in North America, IDW has long championed independent voices in comics, and it is doubling down on its mission by partnering with White Ash Comics to create an exciting new imprint. Now, ScreenRant is pleased to bring fans a first look.

White Ash Comics began over a decade ago, the brainchild of Charlie Stickney, artist Conor Hughes and colorist Fin Cramb. Through a series of interconnected titles, they have crafted the White Ash Universe. While set in the fictional mining town of White Ash, Pennsylvania, the books are very much rooted in the fantasy tradition. White Ash has released two titles so far set in this universe: the aforementioned White Ash, as well as Glarien, and its partnership with IDW will bring these titles to a wider audience.

Previously, White Ash Comics has relied exclusively on crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter to get its name out. The company has been highly successful using the site, raising over a million dollars and earning the reputation as a Top 10 publisher on Kickstarter. Now, White Ash, by joining forces with IDW, is stepping into the big leagues, ready to show the rest of the comics’ scene what it's all about.

Today, IDW and White Ash Comics are formally announcing the formation of a new imprint devoted solely to Glarien and the rest of the White Ash Universe. The imprint will launch next April with White Ash Comics #1, followed in June by The Game #1. Then, in September 2027, it will release Glarien: Short and Deadly, and will begin fleshing out the backstory of its universe, using the diminutive elf as a starting point. From there, White Ash will release a steady stream of miniseries and one-shots.

While making the transition from crowdfunding platforms to the direct market can seem daunting, White Ash Comics is up for the task. Charles Stickney, who serves as the Publisher and CEO of White Ash, was “beyond thrilled” to be working with IDW, citing its long history of independent-minded books such as Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees and Locke and Key. Speaking with IDW, Stickney had this to say:

Through our White Ash Comics imprint at IDW, we look forward to bringing our stories to comic shops and bookstores for the first time in the format they were always intended to be read in.

ScreenRant is pleased to bring fans a first look at some of the covers and advance art for upcoming White Ash releases, shared here.

Crowdfunding sites have become one of the most popular avenues for distributing comics, with even major publishers getting in on the act. Crowdfunding allows fans to have a stake in the book’s creation and publication, all while earning cool rewards in the process. White Ash Comics has harnessed the power of crowdfunding, becoming a publishing force without ever once putting a title in shops. For a truly independent publisher to raise over a million dollars is no small feat.

White Ash’s mixture of real-world settings, such as a mining town, and dark fantasy is sure to appeal to fans of television shows like Supernatural. Yet White Ash does not limit itself exclusively to fantasy, and has something for everyone, and fans will see it for themselves when the publisher arrives in stores in early 2027.
