Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has fully settled its Rp218.3 trillion Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) bond debt, closing a nearly three-decade-old financial obligation stemming from the 1997–1998 Asian Financial Crisis.

Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara confirmed that the final installment was paid to Bank Indonesia (BI) on August 24, 2026, during the administration of President Prabowo Subianto.

"At the end of last month, we successfully completed the payment of the BLBI bond debt to Bank Indonesia," Suahasil said at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"The Rp218.3 trillion bond debt has been settled. We have paid it off completely," the minister emphasized.

The BLBI bonds were originally issued by the government nearly 30 years ago as part of an emergency financial intervention to stabilize the national banking system during the systemic crisis of 1997–1998.

Since then, the government has systematically serviced and repaid the obligations through allocations from the State Budget (APBN).

Suahasil explained that the final settlement was funded through Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) derived from Bank Indonesia's operational surplus.

Under applicable financial laws and regulations, the central bank's operational surplus is remitted to the state treasury, allowing the government to use the funds to settle the remaining debt.

Suahasil described the complete repayment of the debt as a historic milestone in Indonesia's fiscal management and macroeconomic resilience.

"We have truly closed the chapter on the crisis-management bonds issued in 1997–1998," Suahasil concluded.
