Indonesia expects 120 million travelers for year-end holidays

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation has projected that public mobility during the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year holiday period will increase to around 120 million people.
"Based on the ministry's data, public mobility during the 2024–2025 Christmas and New Year holidays reached more than 94 million people," Deputy Transportation Minister Suntana said at the 2026 Nataru Mobility Expo at Sarinah, Jakarta, on Sunday.
"This figure rose to 110 million during the 2025–2026 holiday period. For 2026–2027, we now project around 120 million," he added.
He said the upward trend was partly driven by government policies and support for the transportation sector, including incentives covering four modes of transport during the upcoming year-end holiday period.
"This is a fact supported by data and statistics, showing that President Prabowo Subianto's economic stimulus policies have been well received by the public," Suntana said.
The government has allocated Rp883 billion (around US$49.7 million) for travel discounts across four modes of transportation during the 2026–2027 Christmas and New Year holiday period: rail, sea transport, ferry services, and air travel.
Specifically, the government will cover 100 percent of the value-added tax (VAT) on domestic economy-class airline tickets for flights from December 22, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
For rail services, passengers will receive a 30-percent discount on commercial economy-class tickets for journeys in Java and North Sumatra from December 22, 2026, to January 4, 2027.
Meanwhile, passenger ships will offer a 30-percent discount on base fares for economy-class tickets across all routes for journeys from December 17, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
For ASDP ferry services, port service fees will be waived for pedestrian passengers and vehicles in categories II and IVA at 14 ports for crossings from December 22, 2026, to January 10, 2027.
