Lawyer Anne Loraine Garcia-Marquez, the chief of staff of the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s (BIR) Office of the Commissioner, took the witness stand in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Aside from serving as the BIR witness, Garcia-Marquez also facilitated the transfer of the tax records of Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio to the Senate impeachment court.

But who is Garcia-Marquez?

Garcia-Marquez graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accountancy from the University of the Philippines, later earning her Juris Doctor degree from the Ateneo de Manila School of Law.

Aside from being a lawyer, she is also a certified public accountant.

Before beginning her work at the BIR, Garcia-Marquez said that she also worked in an audit firm, and a law firm. She also served as an in-house counsel for a private company.

Garcia-Marquez started at the BIR as an action lawyer in the Law and Legislative Division.

Eventually, she became the chief of staff of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Legal Group before becoming the chief of staff for BIR Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza.

During Thursday’s trial session, Garcia-Marquez said that some of her responsibilities included assisting the BIR commissioner in daily operations, the review of every document that the BIR Commissioner receives and signs, as well as the reception of all the letters that the Commissioner gets.

Garcia-Marquez also stated that she was the one who oversaw the transfer of the BIR files that were subpoenaed by the Senate impeachment court. —VAL, GMA News
