Indonesia to join Cambodia conference on combating online scams

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will participate in the International Conference on Combating Online Scams (ICCOS) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on September 23–24, 2026, reinforcing its commitment to bilateral law enforcement cooperation against cybercrime syndicates.

Speaking through a press release on Thursday, Chargé d'Affaires ad Interim of the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh Krishnajie Partadireja reaffirmed Jakarta’s commitment to bolstering cross-border law enforcement.

"The Indonesian and Cambodian governments have agreed on police cooperation to take legal action against Indonesian citizens involved in online scam activities, as well as cooperation in tracing the flow of funds suspected to originate from such criminal activities," Krishnajie said.

The diplomatic push coincides with growing embassy concern over approximately 700 Indonesian nationals who remain in Cambodian immigration detention centers and temporary shelters, despite having received emergency travel documents (SPLP) and overstay fee waivers.

Some individuals have resided in shelters since February 2026.

Diplomats are urging these citizens to purchase tickets home immediately following a sharp crackdown by local authorities under Cambodia's new Law on Combating Online Scams, enacted on April 7, 2026.

Embassy officials noted that some individuals awaiting deportation have engaged in further criminal activities, including drug trafficking, theft, and assault.

"We urge Indonesian citizens who have obtained travel documents not to delay their return," Krishnajie emphasized, urging nationals to respect local laws to protect the country’s international reputation.

Since early September 2026, Cambodian law enforcement has detained an additional 118 Indonesian citizens during operations in Battambang Province and Serei Saophoan (Banteay Meanchey Province).

These individuals will undergo formal legal proceedings under Cambodian jurisdiction, with the embassy ensuring consular access.

Between January 1 and September 15, 2026, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh received repatriation assistance requests from 12,940 Indonesian citizens associated with online scam networks, successfully facilitating the return of 8,252 citizens to date.

Krishnajie confirmed the embassy is maintaining continuous dialogue with Cambodian law enforcement to ensure consular access while respecting local judicial processes.
