The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 won’t be the only season to feature a major time jump.

Season 3 picks up five years after the events of season 2’s explosive finale. The new timeline will feature the main Lord of the Rings characters, including Galadriel, Sauron, Elrond, Arondir, and Gandalf, at different places in their lives. During San Diego Comic-Con 2026, co-creator J.D. Payne confirmed that season 3’s time jump is the “shot of adrenaline” the story needs, heading straight to the peak of the war. He also described it as a reset that lets new viewers catch up.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, showrunner and co-creator Peter McKay was asked whether timeline jumps would be part of the hit fantasy show's future seasons. He confirmed that time jumps will definitely be a significant part of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's storytelling going forward. This lets the characters age and the kingdoms develop as the story progresses.

Patrick McKay: Yeah, very much so. I think from the very beginning, we aspired the show to compress the time that’s in the books, but also to have significant jumps forward in time for characters to age, for kingdoms to rise or fall, and I think you know there will probably be some jumps in the future.

Set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic The Lord of the Rings books, The Rings of Power series introduces a new side of Middle-earth. The prequel features never-before-seen regions and cultures, while chronicling the creation of the magical rings.

The Rings of Power season 3 skips to the middle of the Elves’ raging war against Sauron, who has already built a powerful force after victoriously winning Morgoth's crown. The new season will also finally show the forging of the infamous One Ring, a key part of Sauron's evil plans.

The Prime Video prequel spin-off is executive-produced by showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, with Amazon MGM Studios, New Line Cinema, and The Tolkien Estate. The Rings of Power season 3 will feature returning cast members Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Charles Vickers as Sauron, Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Daniel Weyman as Gandalf, Ciarán Hinds as the Dark Wizard, Rory Kinnear as Tom Bombadil, and Sophia Nomvete as Queen Disa. Since its debut in 2022, the fantasy epic has maintained an average critical rating of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Season 3 also welcomes new faces, including Andrew Richardson as Anárion, Zubin Varla as Khamûl, Adam Young as Marnûkh, Eddie Marsan as Thráin, Lee Braithwaite as Gamli, and Amber Mendez-Martin as Gerda. Also joining the ensemble cast is Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower, who will be playing a familiar Lord of the Rings character in the form of Celeborn. He will be introduced as Galadriel's long-lost husband, who was originally played by Marton Csokas in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movies.

Prime Video's The Rings of Power season 3 will have a new release schedule. The first four episodes of Season 3 will premiere on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Episodes 5 and 6 will then release on Wednesday, November 18. Meanwhile, its final two episodes are scheduled to drop on Wednesday, November 25.
