CALASIAO, Pangasinan – Two children, who were harvesting kangkong (water spinach) for lunch, drowned in a fishpond near their residence on Tuesday morning.

Police said the boys, aged 9 and 10 and are siblings, were gathering vegetables at the pond when the younger child wandered towards the deep end. 

The 10-year-old child attempted to rescue him, but they both slipped and fell into the pond.

An eight-year-old cousin who was with them alerted their family, and the victims were fished out and transported by an ambulance to the Bayambang District Hospital. The boys were declared dead on arrival.

In a statement, the local government of Bayambang said it deeply mourns the tragic deaths of two young Bayambang residents.

“During this time of profound grief, the entire LGU-Bayambang, led by Mayor Niña Jose-Quiambao, extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased children. As an expression of sympathy and support, the Mayor’s Action Center immediately went to their homes to personally extend assistance to the bereaved families,” according to the statement posted on the town’s social media page. /coa
