The Nigerian Army has inaugurated 49 welfare and infrastructure projects across the country to improve personnel welfare, enhance operational efficiency and address accommodation challenges facing officers and soldiers.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, disclosed this on Thursday, during the commissioning of a newly constructed Officers Transit Accommodation at Life Camp, Abuja.

The facility was among 11 projects commissioned in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while 38 others were inaugurated across Nigerian Army formations and units nationwide.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shaibu said the projects aligned with his Command Philosophy, particularly the pillars of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept, which prioritise personnel welfare in building a professional, adaptable and combat-ready force.

He said adequate accommodation and essential infrastructure were critical to boosting morale, improving productivity and strengthening the Army’s capacity to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.

The COAS said, “The projects underscore the Nigerian Army’s sustained commitment to providing a conducive living and working environment for officers, soldiers and their families.”

He charged officers who would occupy the newly commissioned transit accommodation to maintain the facility and uphold the highest standards of discipline and responsibility.

Shaibu also reaffirmed his commitment to sustained investment in welfare and infrastructure across Army formations and units nationwide, while appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigerian Army.

Earlier, the Chief of Logistics (Army), Major General Adekunle Adeyinka, said the Officers Transit Accommodation was designed to address temporary accommodation challenges faced by officers posted to Army Headquarters and other formations in Abuja.

According to him, the facility comprises well-furnished, self-contained apartments equipped with modern amenities to provide comfortable accommodation for officers awaiting permanent allocation.

He said the development would improve personnel welfare and administrative efficiency by providing suitable temporary accommodation for officers during their transition to new postings.

As part of his visit, the COAS inspected ongoing infrastructure projects at Life Camp, including additional accommodation blocks, road rehabilitation and drainage works.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work and directed contractors to adhere strictly to approved timelines and specifications.

The Army said the commissioning of the 49 projects reflected its continued efforts to address accommodation and infrastructure needs while improving the living and working conditions of personnel and their families.

The initiative is also expected to provide a more conducive environment for effective training, administration and military operations in support of national security.
