Nigeria @ 66: We need leaders who prioritize national development over personal interests – Hadiza Abubakar

Nollywood actress Hadiza Abubakar has lamented the steady deterioration of the Nigerian economy despite being endowed with natural resources, rich culture and human capital.

The actress expressed this concern as the country celebrated 65 years of independence on Thursday.

Sharing her frustration in a post on Instagram, the actress stressed the need for purposeful leaders who would prioritize national development over personal interests.

In her words: “We look at our nation’s vast resources and wonder what could have been. Nigeria is blessed with oil, gas, fertile land, talented people, rich culture and immense potential.

“Yet despite this abundance, many citizens still struggle with poverty, unemployment, insecurity and inadequate public services.

“It’s a common frustration among many of us that while the country has enough wealth to improve the lives of millions, too much of that wealth appears to benefit only a few. Roads remain poor, electricity remains unreliable and basic needs remain out of reach.

“Yet Nigeria is so richly endowed. We need leaders who put the common man first and not the ones whose personal interests too often come before national development.

“Leadership should be about service, accountability and leaving a better future for generations to come… not merely accumulating wealth and power for themselves and doing nothing.

“In 2027, please vote with the pain and excitement you feel right now as a Nigerian citizen.”

For actress Bibi Sonye, Nigeria will rise again. She reaffirmed her belief in the country, saying even though the journey has not always been easy, she has chosen to remain hopeful.

“Hopeful for a Nigeria that continues to grow, evolve, and become a country we can all be proud to call home. There are moments when the future can feel uncertain, I choose to remain hopeful,” the actress said.
