Classic rock is wide and varied, and there are perfect songs within the genre for every season and mood. In this list, we will explore iconic albums that tap into the morbid pleasure that comes with exploring the darkest sides of human emotion. These albums can be great for catharsis, for screaming along to, or simply to have in the background during spooky season and get in the mood.

The artists included on this list are from all over the spectrum of rock music: there are timeless rock legends like David Bowie, goth icons like The Cure, and heavy metal pioneers like Black Sabbath. With these albums, they helped redefine dark classic rock, each in their own way.

5 "Seventeen Seconds" by The Cure (1980)

A wonderful album by The Cure, but sadly one that wasn't appreciated when it came out. Seventeen Seconds was released in 1980, amid a very turbulent time for the band. They had just wrapped up a tour as the supporting act for Siouxsie and the Banshees, and despite the strained relationships among the band members, The Cure went into the studio to record their second album. Seventeen Seconds was recorded in just seven days, since money was short, so the process was rushed, but despite the time and budget constraints, the finished product was a beautiful, dark gothic rock album. It is by no means the most successful piece of art The Cure has ever done, but it is a landmark in their careers. As they gradually became more popular, this album shows that they were true pioneers in goth rock, and for singer Robert Smith, this is way more important than its disappointing commercial performance. In fact, in some ways, he considers it better than some of their most successful albums.

"Sales don’t mean anything. Seventeen Seconds sold less than 50,000 albums globally in the first year, but I still thought that it was a fantastic record," Smith explained. "So although later we scaled the heights, and sold millions of records, success doesn't vindicate a record for me. It doesn't make it any better than Seventeen Seconds."

4 "Strange Days" by The Doors (1967)

The Doors were a completely different brand of dark rock, but they could do brooding, unsettling tracks like no one else in rock 'n' roll. Strange Days was released less than a year after their widely successful debut album, and taking advantage of their growing audience, the band decided to expand their horizons and experiment on their second album. They approach the dark side of rock music from the psychedelic side, which they always did incredibly. Strange Days didn't do nearly as well as their self-titled debut album when it first came out, but decades later, it's considered one of their greatest, especially the timeless singles, "People Are Strange," and "Love Me Two Times."

The name Strange Days was very apt, guitarist Robby Krieger explained, as singer Jim Morrison was going through some weird and potentially dangerous emotional situations. “He was talking about killing himself and all this stuff,” Krieger admitted. But once again, it was music and friendship that saved the day. Amid those turbulent feelings, the band had a bonding moment that led to the creation of their hit, "People Are Strange," and to Morrison finding some measure of peace.

“We decided to take a walk up to the top of Laurel Canyon. Like, ‘Let’s go up and watch the sun come up.’ And when the sun came up he suddenly got this idea about the fact that when you’re strange then people are strange. The whole idea just popped into his head – ‘Oh, I got an idea for a song!’, you know – and half an hour later we had it.”

3 "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath (1970)

Of course the Prince of Darkness had to be included on this list. Black Sabbath were the indisputable icon of heavy metal, and they constantly liked to toy with the darkest, most uncomfortable human feelings, accompanied by the strongest, most shocking melodies. Their self-titled debut album established them as one of the most relevant bands of their time, and they did so by expertly weaving harsh, overpowering heavy metal sounds with raw, real lyrics.

“What I love about the band is that we allowed our vulnerability to stick out,” drummer Bill Ward said about Black Sabbath. “When I think about the lyrics to ‘The Wizard,’ some people could probably feel that they’re laughable. But they actually meant something for us, and we were bold or brave enough to show ourselves from the inside out.”

The first song they wrote for their album was the title track, "Black Sabbath," which of course named the album and the band, feels like a horror movie. It's told from the perspective of a man being pursued by a monster or the devil, he's not sure. He both asks for help and warns people to run away, and without realizing, Ozzy Osbourne's incredible performance got him dubbed as the Prince of Darkness. “We were all so proud of ourselves when we wrote ‘Black Sabbath,'” bassist Geezer Butler recalled. “I think it took a couple of hours to write it from top to bottom. Tony played the riff and we all just joined in. Ozzy spontaneously sang the lyrics. Then Tony topped it all by coming up with the menacing riff at the end. We knew it totally represented each one of us.”

2 "Diamond Dogs" by David Bowie (1974)

The cover of this often overlooked David Bowie album speaks for itself. Bowie could do practically anything. He was never afraid to push boundaries, to experiment even at the expense of himself, but this era of his career was borderline dangerous. Which in itself made it iconic. The album was Bowie stepping out of the shadow of Ziggy Stardust, and merging different projects he'd been working on while touring. The result of this experiment was Diamond Dogs, an album that showed Bowie tearing himself apart to find something new. He broke up his own band, mashed together different ideas he had, and came through the other side with a hugely successful collection of songs. He backed up this album with an obscenely expensive tour, with elaborate sets, outfits, and performances. But the intensity of the experience came at a cost. Bowie was overusing substances and running himself ragged, and everyone around him could see it. Looking back on it, Bowie could see he was pushing himself too far.

“Diamond Dogs scared me because I was mutating into something I just didn’t believe in anymore, and the dreadful thing was, it was so easy,” Bowie admitted. “The Diamond Dogs period was just an extension of Aladdin Sane, which in itself was just an extrapolation of Ziggy Stardust. But by the time of Diamond Dogs that persona had started to feel claustrophobic, and I needed a change… Diamond Dogs was making me sick, both physically and creatively, and I was shifting into melodrama."

1 "Welcome to My Nightmare" by Alice Cooper (1975)

Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare is an album that shakes you to the core from beginning to end, down to the title. The name itself feels extremely vivid and uncomfortable. You know from the start it won't be a normal piece of music; it'll be an experience that every fan of dark rock music will never forget. The album could be used as a horror movie soundtrack and it would fit perfectly. Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album that takes listeners through a sequence of nightmares from the point of view of a child named Steven, and it was Cooper's way of mixing together his different passions: music, movies, and theater.

“I loved horror movies. Still do. And I also love theatre and musicals," he explained. "And I always had the grand idea that we could take the basic album and create a stage show from it, which is what we ultimately did. I saw it as like a cross between a nasty fairy tale and something like West Side Story."
