Bafana Bafana vs Egypt: Salah, rotations, and what’s really at stake

Translate

Bafana Bafana wrap up the international window with a friendly against Egypt in Cairo on 4 October.

Pitso Mosimane may rotate the team, resting some stars and giving fringe players game time.

Meanwhile, questions are circulating about whether Mohamed Salah will play for his country.

Here’s why South Africa vs Egypt really matters, as both countries chase continental success.

Mosimane wants to prove himself against tough opposition

The Bafana Bafana coach has been clear about why the friendly against Egypt aligns with his vision.

According to IOL, he is avoiding the “easy route” of playing a game where winning is a formality.

“I asked myself: ‘Am I doing the same things with these friendly games, or should I get someone whom we can beat 5-0 and say we have turned the corner?”

Mosimane referenced his first stint as coach, where the team failed to qualify for the 2012 AFCON.

Bafana Bafana played to a 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone in their last qualifier game, and ended up behind Niger on head-to-head results.

Mosimane subsequently departed his position as coach amid intense criticism from all quarters.

Will Salah play against Bafana Bafana?

Mohamed Salah’s status is another big talking point for the game.

He missed the second of Egypt’s 2027 AFCON qualifier ties, and the reason remains unclear.

Coach Hossam Hassan initially stated Salah would miss the South Sudan game as it was played on artificial turf, according to Goal.

He then backtracked, as cited by KickOff, claiming the Liverpool legend was absent due to “personal circumstances.”

Some sources claim Salah will miss the Bafana Bafana game completely, while others are certain he will feature.

The speculation about the iconic forward has also opened criticism of Hassan and his handling of the situation.

Mosimane could shuffle squad for Egypt friendly

Meanwhile, several Bafana Bafana players are expected to be rested for the game against the Pharaohs.

Of the 30 players named in Mosimane’s final squad, only a handful have not featured.

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams may be rested, giving Sipho Chaine or Ricardo Goss a chance.

Fawaaz Basadien, Thabang Matuludi, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Puso Dithejane, Tashreeq Matthews, and Shandre Campbell are also yet to play under the new coach.

Mosimane is expected to name his squad in the coming days.
