Indonesia's defense minister to welcome Giuseppe Garibaldi

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin will welcome the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta on Friday, Indonesian Navy Spokesman First Adm. Tunggul said.

“The aircraft carrier will arrive in Jakarta on Friday, September 18, 2026, and is scheduled to be welcomed by Defense Minister Gen. (ret.) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin,” Tunggul said in a Navy statement here Thursday.

Senior military officials are also expected to attend, including TNI Commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Muhammad Ali, and Air Force Chief of Staff Air Marshal Mohamad Tonny Harjono.

Tunggul did not provide details of the welcoming ceremony but said the carrier was still en route to Jakarta.

Garibaldi departed Italy on August 24 and has been escorted by Italian Navy warships during its voyage.

Tunggul said the carrier had made several port calls during the voyage, including in Sri Lanka.

After leaving Sri Lanka, the first aircraft carrier to enter Indonesian service entered Indonesian waters through the Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lane I, or ALKI I, near Bangka, Bangka Belitung.

Upon entering Indonesian waters, the carrier was escorted by two Indonesian Navy warships, the KRI Brawijaya-320 and KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321.
