Sara Duterte impeachment trial Day 34: What to expect

Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura is set to return to the witness stand on Tuesday for the continuation of his cross-examination by the defense panel at the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Defense counsel Mark Vinluan is set to continue his questioning of Buenaventura in relation to Article 2 of the impeachment case, alleging that Duterte accumulated unexplained wealth.

After the cross-examination, the prosecution and the defense will be given the opportunity for redirect and recross examinations of the witness, respectively.

Senator-judges will thereafter be given time for their interjections.

On Monday, the Senate impeachment court allowed Buenaventura to testify on the bank transactions of Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio.

Senate impeachment court presiding officer Francis "Chiz" Escudero said that existing provisions in laws on the confidentiality of bank transactions are not absolute because AMLC is not a passive institution to begin with.

Buenaventura disclosed that at least P4.4 billion worth of covered and suspicious transactions were recorded under the bank accounts of Duterte and Carpio.

Of the amount, he said that P1.63 billion accounted for inflows, while P1.3 billion was for outflows. He also said there are P1.4 billion worth of covered and suspicious transactions with undetermined inflows and outflows.

Buenaventura also confirmed on Monday that Cale88 Foods Corporation, a company linked to the Vice President’s husband, received P319 million from China and Hong Kong. —Giselle Ombay/LDF/KG, GMA News
