Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has granted an absolute pardon to 130 inmates as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Mr Mutfwang also commuted the death sentences of four inmates to life imprisonment, according to a statement issued on Thursday by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

The governor exercised the powers after consultations with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, the statement said.

The four inmates whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment are Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi.

Among those granted absolute pardon are Kamshine Gomerep, Maju Sajen, Jan Thomas, Gody Victor, Imran Maikasuwa, Biplang Emmanuel, Peace Sunday, Salisu Usman and Geoffrey John.

Mr Mutfwang announced the decision while felicitating with Plateau residents and Nigerians in the country and the diaspora on the 66th Independence Anniversary.

He said the anniversary offered Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of past leaders, acknowledge its challenges and renew their commitment to building a stronger and more united nation.

The governor urged Nigerians to preserve the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that nation-building was a collective responsibility.

“The responsibility of nation-building has passed from one generation to another and every citizen has a role to play in building a peaceful, stable and prosperous country,” he said.

Mr Mutfwang also called on Nigerians to remain committed to national cohesion, saying the country’s strength depended on citizens rising above their differences.

He commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts towards national cohesion, peace and economic development, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a Plateau where residents could pursue their aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.

The governor also commended Plateau residents for what he described as their resilience, patience, patriotism and contributions to the development of the state and Nigeria.

He urged Nigerians to continue believing in the country and contribute to building a nation that reflects the sacrifices of its past heroes and the aspirations of future generations.
