How to watch Emma Thompson's "perfect" '90s classic Sense and Sensibility for free

There's a brand-new adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility out in the cinemas this week, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as the Dashwood sisters.

And if that's got you wanting to watch the classic 1995 version directed by Ang Lee that Emma Thompson both stars in and wrote the screenplay for, there's actually a way to watch it for free.

As well as Thompson, the film's impressive cast includes a pre-Titanic Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and the late, great Alan Rickman.

The film is part of the Sony Pictures Core library, and you can actually subscribe to that via a Prime Video add-on channel, and there's a seven-day free trial option available. Ironically, the film is only available on the service for the next week.

You don't need to be an Amazon Prime subscriber to sign up for Sony Pictures Core, but if you are, the film is also available that way.

This version of Sense and Sensibility won Best Film at the BAFTAs, as well as Best Actress for Thompson and Best Supporting Actress for Winslet. Thompson also won an award for her screenplay at the Oscars (making her the only person to have won an Oscar for both).

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a near-perfect score of 97% positive from 140 critic review, with The Guardian stating that it was full of "humor, dramatic force and the kind of romance that isn't merely sentimental".

The user score on IMDb is lower, sitting at a 7.7/10 average from 138,000 ratings.

One particularly enthusiastic fan called it "a perfect film" and praised "the Regency beauty of Kate Winslet, the repressed emotionality of Miss Thompson, the gentle good humor of Grant, the hopeless, prideful longing of Alan Rickman".
