The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Tuesday will issue subpoenas to the individuals behind a pet crematorium over the disposal of deceased dogs and cats in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.
NBI director Melvin Matibag met with pet owners who filed complaints and representatives of non-government organizations (NGOs) at the agency's headquarters to discuss the investigation.
“We can subpoena the personalities. Yung tao at saka yung dokumento nila. Definitely, dapat may record 'yan,” Matibag said during the meeting.
(We can subpoena the personalities. The person and then their documents. Definitely, there should be a record of that.)
The NBI is also conducting an inventory, analyzing video footage, and preparing to visit relevant locations as part of its probe, according to Matibag.
He said the crematorium could face multiple charges, including betrayal of public trust, estafa, and violations of environmental laws over the alleged improper disposal of animal remains.
Matibag also warned that individuals who allegedly threatened complainants could face obstruction of justice charges.
Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) executive director Atty. Anna Cabrera said the organization had gathered 191 affidavits and submissions from pet owners. A total of 25 pet owners had retrieved the remains of their pets. Of the 25, 12 had formally sought the PAWS' assistance.
More than 20 decomposing remains of dogs and cats were found sealed in plastic bags and dumped along a road in Barangay Minuyan Proper, San Jose del Monte City.
