Fisherman nabbed for allegedly hiring unlicensed crewmen in Mindoro

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Police arrested a fisherman who also operates a fishing vessel for allegedly employing unlicensed fishermen / crewmen in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro on Saturday.

Recovered from the suspect were a fishing vessel, fishing gear and catch worth an estimated P940,000.

The Occidental Mindoro Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA), in coordination with the San Jose Municipal Police Station, apprehended the alleged violator at  9:55 a.m., around 18 kilometers off the shoreline of Barangay San Roque, according to the Police Regional Office (PRO) Mimaropa.

Police said the operation was conducted in line with their maritime patrol tasking and resulted in the arrest of the fisherman for alleged violation of Section 113 of Republic Act No. 10654, which prohibits commercial fishing vessel operators from employing unlicensed fisherfolk or crewmen.

The suspect and seized items were brought to the Occidental Mindoro MARPSTA for documentation and proper disposition.

Police said the an appropriate complaint will be filed before the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Adjudication Board.
