Novak Djokovic showed ultimate sportsmanship ahead of Stan Wawrinka’s final tournament, personally asking tournament officials for a seat to watch his former rival’s send-off in Basel.

Wawrinka is calling time on his legendary career at the 2026 Swiss Indoors after more than two decades on tour, with his opening round against Jiri Lehecka potentially marking his final appearance.

Despite Wawrinka famously denying Djokovic three Grand Slam titles in epic fashion throughout their careers, the 24-time major winner wanted to be there in person to pay tribute.

“Novak came to see me to ask if he could attend Stan’s farewell match,” Swiss Indoors president Roger Brennwald revealed. “That says a lot about the great champion he is.”

Djokovic will join Swiss legends Martina Hingis and Dario Cologna in the tournament director’s box to witness Wawrinka’s curtain call.

Roger Brennwald, the president of the Swiss Indoors, told Swiss newspaper Blick that Djokovic asked to attend Wawrinka’s opening match in Basel.

“As soon as it was confirmed that he would be playing for us, Novak came to see me to ask if he could attend Stan’s farewell match,” Brennwald divulged.

“In my eyes, that says a lot about the great champion and the fantastic sportsman he is.
