6,664 human rights complaints pending in Bauchi — NHRC

Translate

The National Human Rights Commission in Bauchi State says it handled 9,969 cases between January and October 2026.

The NHRC State Coordinator, Mrs Yachit Dala, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Bauchi.

Dala said the commission resolved 3,305 cases, while 6,664 remained pending.

She said the cases involved gender-based violence (GBV), rape, sexual and domestic violence, mistreatment, abandonment of parental responsibilities, and civil and political rights violations.

The coordinator said the complaints were received, assessed and registered to ensure their amicable resolution.

“The commission also investigates allegations and sets up special panels or tribunals to hear petitions and review testimonies,” she said.

According to Dala, the commission provides support to victims and makes recommendations towards amicable resolution of cases.

Dala identified inadequate funding, low public awareness and illiteracy as major challenges to the commission’s operations.

While urging people to report cases of abuse to the commission, Dala called on youth and women’s groups to champion the campaign against human rights abuses.
