Former Nigeria defender Chikelue Iloenyosi has praised Rangers International for their resilience and never-say-die spirit following their hard-fought 2-0 victory over Algerian side MC Alger in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round, Completesports.com reports.

Despite facing a stubborn MC Alger defence, Rangers maintained their determination and persistence, striking twice late in the game to secure a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in Algeria this weekend.

Iloenyosi Applauds Rangers

Iloenyosi, chairman of the Anambra State Football Association, commended the Coal City Flying Antelopes for their fighting spirit and determination, describing the victory as a testament to the club’s character.

The former U-23 Olympic Eagles defender particularly praised the players and technical crew for their discipline and courage, noting that Rangers’ ability to secure victory despite playing with 10 men for a significant portion of the encounter underlined their resilience.

He also hailed the late goals from Kenneth Igboke and James Emo, describing them as a fitting reward for the team’s perseverance and commitment. According to him, the performance demonstrated that Nigerian clubs have what it takes to compete against strong opponents on the continental stage.

“This is a commendable victory for Rangers and Nigerian football. To beat a strong team like MC Alger 2-0 in such difficult circumstances shows great character and determination,” Iloenyosi said.

“I congratulate the players, coaches, management and fans. They have made Enugu and Nigeria proud.”

No Room For Complacency

However, the former defender, popularly known as ‘De General’, cautioned the nine-time Nigerian champions against becoming complacent, insisting that they must remain focused ahead of the decisive second leg.

“The team must remain humble and determined. With the same spirit and togetherness, they can finish the job and qualify for the group stage,” he added.

Iloenyosi expressed hope that Rangers’ performance would inspire other Nigerian clubs to raise their ambitions and compete with greater confidence in continental competitions.
