In the blackest night of the far future, there is only war. Beyond some mild differences in phrasing, everybody might recognize the cadence or vibe as Warhammer: 40,000's signature tagline, more or less. But DC Comics may have just brilliantly injected its own iconic characters into the grimdark world of Games Workshop's prized franchise, or at least, in spirit, with Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos. The series is set to release on January 2027, and frankly, it looks incredible as one of the latest of DC's wildly creative Elseworlds stories. The series focuses on an alternate future in which humanity has laid waste across the far reaches of space, with only Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps daring to stand up against them.

Written by Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns) and illustrated by Kyle Hotz (Justice League Dark), the series presents humanity as its stand-in for the Imperium of Man, conquering world after world, with the Green Lanterns helping their lone human recruit, Hal, defect to their cause. It presents the Corps as Space Marine-esque, but battered, nearly broken, and facing impossible odds, almost mixing with an Imperial Guard-like concept in terms of fighting to the last as the galaxy's last hope. The vibes are immaculate for Warhammer 40k fans either seeking something new or to see similarly over-the-top energy brought by the biggest comics publisher around, and it's coming soon.

Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 is set for release in January 2027, featuring the work of Watters and Hotz, with colors by Dan Brown, letters by Steve Wands, and some truly breathtaking variant covers by Björn Barends, Steve Beach, and Ashley Wood. For those wondering if the series is acting on a gimmick, this is partially true, but with an earnest execution, as Hotz confirms his intent to communicate an over-the-top sci-fi aesthetic while channeling epic war films. Given the fact that Warhammer 40k has long stood as a vehicle for those vibes while satirizing fascism, injecting tons of literary/cinematic references across its factions, and carrying notes of Starship Troopers and Dune.

“Visually, I am trying to walk the line between over-the-top space opera and the emotional beats of the story. Apart from being a Green Lantern fan from when I was just a little kid, my prep for this was really spending time studying some of the best war films. I want to get the feeling across that the Lanterns are beat up, tired, and certainly the underdogs. Their armor is cracked and broken, and their weapons are held together with tape and wire. These are soldiers nearing the end of their fight.”

The tone is certainly on par with that of Warhammer 40k, namely, an entire universe on the brink of collapse, with humanity being the supposed main threat at the moment, much like the Great Crusade of M30's expansion, establishing galactic fealty to the God Emperor. While perhaps coincidental, Watters' additional new work on Judge Dredd/Biker Mice from Mars brought him together with Dawn of War tie-in comic writer Ryan O'Sullivan. The creative collaboration and partnership between two noteworthy English comic authors suggests some overlapping interests in numerous iconic British franchises, bringing only good things to the table, it seems.

Teasing a story of betrayal by his battle brother, Oliver Queen, as a nod to previous Green Lantern-Green Arrow stories, this is not the average story of the universal peacekeeping force. They're weary, beaten down, and bringing in Hal as their only human member is as much of a strategic move by the Corps to gain a foothold as it is a major step forward for Hal himself. It'll bring Hal into massive-scale battles across the stars alongside familiar non-human Corps members, while encountering familiar faces either on the opposite side of the battlefield, or in new and strained alliances.

Hal's actions, if he were in the Imperium of the 40k universe, would certainly get him labeled as a heretic siding with the xenos in Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, but it's an interesting spin outside of Warhammer lore that allows this to be possible. While it's entirely fair to want a story in the future focusing on Warhammer 40k's Severan Dominate secessionists, this series looks to address the idea of the Green Lanterns' battery on the verge of death against a destructive imperial human force. With iconic heroes instead featuring as warriors on the battlefield, nobody's safety is guaranteed, as even on the brightest day, there is only war.
