BI eyes QRIS expansion to Saudi Arabia, India, Vietnam and Australia

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Bank Bank Indonesia (BI) is exploring potential cooperation to expand the cross-border usage of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) to Saudi Arabia, India, Vietnam and Australia.

Executive Director of BI's Payment System Policy Department Fitria Irmi Triswati said that the central bank is engaged in high-level discussions with international counterparts to broaden regional payment connectivity.

"We are exploring possibilities with counterparts in India, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Australia, as regional payment connectivity is expanding. Eventually, this will involve not only QRIS but also Indonesia's BI-FAST system," Fitria remarked here on Wednesday.

Since its launch in 2019, QRIS adoption has surged—a trend significantly accelerated by shift to contactless transactions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, QRIS has recorded 15 billion transactions, approaching its target of 17 billion.

The merchant base has expanded to 45 million business entities toward a target of 47 million, while the total user base has reached 78 million—surpassing the initial 70 million user target.

Cross-border QRIS payment connectivity is currently active across six partner nations—Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China—out of an overall target of eight countries.

Fitria emphasized that the global expansion of QRIS will be tailored to regional payment habits while accelerating adoption among merchants.

For example, consumers in Japan and South Korea generally prefer Customer Presented Mode (CPM), where merchants scan the customer's QR code.

Meanwhile, in European regions, consumer preference leans toward contactless tapping transactions.

"So, we are looking at expanding to more countries, improving merchant quality and broadening the available features. It goes beyond simple scanning to include CPM and QRIS-Tap," Fitria concluded.
