‘Carrie’ Renewed for Second Season at Prime Video

The first season of Carrie on Prime Video told the story of Stephen King‘s debut novel, albeit updated to the present day. The show, however, is not stopping there.

Prime Video has renewed Carrie for a second season and will continue to follow Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) after the fateful events of prom night. The pickup is a pretty fast one, coming two weeks after season one’s Oct. 7 premiere. Prime Video says the series was No. 1 on the Amazon-owned streamer in more than 100 territories in its first two weeks.

Mike Flanagan, who adapted King’s novel, will continue as showrunner and executive producer in season two. King is also an exec producer.

“Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether — including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios. “It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.”

Season one follows the sheltered Carrie as she enters public high school following her father’s death, but still under the extremely watchful eye of her mother (Samantha Sloyan). “Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social-media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence,” the logline reads.

“For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” said Flanagan.

Added King, “I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”

The season one cast also includes Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard. Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint , Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley and Heather Graham had recurring roles

Flanagan directed four of the first season’s eight episodes. Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata also directed.
