The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspected cultist and recovered a locally made pistol and a live cartridge during an operation in Abeokuta.

The suspect, identified as Idris Obarayi, was arrested at his hideout in Ita Ogboni, Igbore, Abeokuta, at about 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following a distress report about suspected gunfire and screams in the Oke Ago-Owu area.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Deputy Superintendent of Police Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to the statement, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit responded to the report, which was received at about 2:30 a.m., prompting the suspects to flee as officers arrived at the scene.

The operatives recovered the firearm and ammunition during the pursuit, while subsequent tracking and investigative efforts led to the arrest of Ob arayi later that day.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly admitted to belonging to the Aiye confraternity and claimed ownership of the recovered firearm and ammunition.

The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Commissioner of Police in Ogun, Mr Bode Ojajuni, commended the SWAT operatives for their prompt response and follow-up efforts.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive policing and the swift apprehension of criminal suspects, assuring residents that credible information would receive prompt attention.

He urged residents to continue with their lawful activities and report suspicious incidents through appropriate police channels, adding that operations to safeguard lives and property across the state would be sustained.
