Plateau govt assures motorists of safety after attack

The Plateau State Government has condemned the killing of residents in Kassa, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, and assured motorists that the Jos-Barkin Ladi highway remains open and safe for travel.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, said in a statement on Friday that the attack, which occurred on Thursday, 24 September, resulted in the loss of lives and was “deeply regrettable and unacceptable.”

Mrs Ramnap said security agencies would identify and arrest those responsible for the attack, while urging residents and families of the victims to maintain peace and avoid blocking the highway.

She said the government appreciated the grief of affected families and communities but warned that road blockades could put other travellers at risk.

“The Government wishes to assure travellers that the road is clear and open to motorists and other road users,” she said, urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

Attack follows renewed violence

The Kassa attack came amid a fresh wave of violence across Plateau, particularly in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Mangu and Riyom local government areas.

At least nine people, including a pastor, reportedly died in separate attacks across Barkin Ladi and neighbouring communities between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Five people died at Gana-Ropp in Barkin Ladi on September 19, while two others, including a pastor, were reportedly killed at Dorowa Babuje on their way to church.

Other killings were reported at Baten Wereng in Riyom and Ratyidi in Fan District.

The state government subsequently imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu, restricting movement between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. and banning motorcycle use in the affected areas.

The government said the measures were intended to enable security agencies to stabilise the affected areas and prevent further attacks.

Mrs Ramnap said the government remained committed to working with security agencies and communities to strengthen the security network and promote sustainable peace.

She also called on traditional, religious and community leaders to support efforts to prevent further escalation and maintain calm in Kassa, Barkin Ladi and other vulnerable communities.
