Brighton stun Man City, United lose

TROUBLED RED DEVILS: Manchester United’s nine-game winless run is their longest in 38 years, but Carrick said he expects to be still in charge for their AS Roma match

Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday inflicted a second straight English Premier League defeat on Manchester City with a 1-0 win to close within two points of the leaders, while Manchester United slumped to another damaging defeat for Michael Carrick at Chelsea.

Third-placed Brighton ended their wait for a first away win against City at the 18th attempt to bolster dreams of challenging for the title.

The Seagulls have never won a major trophy, but have already beaten champions Arsenal convincingly this season to show their title credentials.

Fabian Hurzeler’s men got revenge for defeat to City on penalties in the English League Cup on Wednesday.

Hurzeler felt aggrieved at that result after his side twice led at the Etihad. This time they held on after Yasin Ayari slotted them into an 11th-minute lead.

Bart Verbruggen was inspiring in the Brighton goal to see off a City onslaught after halftime.

“We expected a game where we had to suffer. Coming to this place is very difficult, facing one of the best teams in the world,” Hurzeler said. “I’m really proud of how my players stuck together. They had a little bit of luck but, in the end, deserved it.”

City won their opening seven league games as Enzo Maresca made a flawless start to the daunting task of succeeding Pep Guardiola.

However, the 10-time English champions know their results on the field might count for little this season unless they can successfully overturn a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules.

City have appealed, but if that ruling is upheld, they are likely to face a severe points penalty and possible relegation from the English top-flight.

“In this moment we are conceding silly goals that we can avoid,” said Maresca. “I think we did enough to deserve something, but we need to move on and try to win games.”

Manchester United’s nine-game winless run is their longest without victory in 38 years after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.

The Red Devils were left to regret not taking advantage of a series of first half chances to take the lead before they imploded in the second period to sit outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Morgan Rogers was allowed to run straight through the heart of the United defense to open the scoring.

Lisandro Martinez then did his under-pressure manager no favors with two quickfire yellow cards, the second of which also conceded a penalty.

Cole Palmer converted from the spot to lift Chelsea into the top four.

“The two halves of football couldn’t probably be further apart,” said Carrick, who added he expects to be in charge for tomorrow’s UEFA Champions League tie against AS Roma.

“We looked in a good place going into halftime and then found a way of unraveling it second half,” he said.

Crystal Palace might beat United to a managerial change after Pierre Sage’s side were easily beaten 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur to remain in the relegation zone.

“It’s a disaster for every club in the Premier League,” said Sage on the prospect of relegation. “I’m not comfortable with the position, but it’s a consequence of what we have done on the pitch.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early red card for a lunge on Micky van de Ven left the Eagles a mountain to climb.

In keeping with Sage’s time in charge, it was Palace’s inability to deal with set-pieces that saw Spurs claim a third consecutive win.

Archie Gray headed in unmarked from a corner before Jan Paul van Hecke bundled in the second after his initial attempt was brilliantly saved by Dean Henderson.

After a difficult start, a resurgent Tottenham are up to eighth.

Aston Villa’s surge up the table stalled in a 1-1 draw against Fulham due to an own goal from goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

The in-form Nicolas Jackson put Unai Emery’s men in front before Suzuki, who had made a string of excellent saves, fumbled Alex Iwobi’s corner over the goal line.

Oliver Glasner vowed to make sweeping changes after a 2-0 defeat at Brentford saw Nottingham Forest slip to 19th.

AFC Bournemouth were also 2-0 winners over Leeds United, while Sunderland remain rooted to the foot of the table after a 3-1 loss at Coventry City.
