Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere: Worldhopper Officially Releases 2028

Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere universe includes an ever-expanding library of unique new adventures for fans of both Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive. That will continue with The Fires of December, Sanderson's next standalone Cosmere novel, which receives its wider physical release on December 8, 2026, following an earlier premium release for crowdfunding backers. The new story offers another opportunity to explore the massive interconnected universe Sanderson has spent decades building.

One of the concepts tying those seemingly separate worlds together is the existence of Worldhoppers: characters who have discovered ways to travel between planets, typically by moving through the Cognitive Realm. Familiar figures like Hoid demonstrate just how important Worldhopping has become as the Cosmere's larger story develops.

And in 2028, the Cosmere is getting an official new release dedicated to Worldhoppers as the beloved fantasy universe gives fans the Sanderson crossover experience they've been waiting on for years.

Fans will finally get an opportunity to make Worldhopping the center of their own adventures, with the Cosmere Roleplaying Game expanding into Worldhopper-focused sourcebooks beginning in 2028. Brotherwise's official roadmap says the Worldhopper sourcebooks will expand beyond Roshar and Scadrial to places including Nalthis, Sel, Lumar, and Canticle, allowing campaigns to remain on one planet or travel throughout the larger Cosmere.

More detailed previews in Chasmfiend Magazine Vol. 3 suggest the initial Worldhopper Handbook and Worldhopper World Guide will draw from Sanderson's standalone Cosmere stories, covering Lumar from Tress of the Emerald Sea, Komashi from Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, Canticle from The Sunlit Man, and First of the Sun, which plays a major role in Sixth of the Dusk and Isles of the Emberdark.

Players are also expected to gain new character options, including Sleepless characters and specialties such as Pilot, Artist, Wayfinder, Captain, Arcanist, and Gunner. Potential Invested paths include abilities inspired by Charred, yoki-hijo, Spore Eaters, and Navigators.

That structure should feel familiar to anyone who has already played the Stormlight or Mistborn campaign settings. Stormlight separates its character rules and magic into a Handbook while using its World Guide for extensive lore, important characters, locations, adversaries, and a bestiary. Mistborn similarly adds rules for both major eras of Scadrial alongside Allomancy, Feruchemy, Hemalurgy, new character paths, and setting-specific adventures.

Worldhopper, however, has to connect all of those systems, and Brotherwise has discussed upcoming comprehensive rules and shared "Crew Vessels," potentially allowing parties to operate anything from ships crossing Lumar's spore seas to spacecraft traveling between worlds. That direction closely resembles Isles of the Emberdark, where Starling and her crew explore the future, spacefaring Cosmere.

If the existing settings are a good reference point, Worldhopper could ultimately become the RPG's most ambitious expansion yet, adapting another Sanderson world and giving players the tools to explore the interconnected Cosmere universe itself.
