The new Avengers: Endgame box office record gets an official reaction and an image from James Cameron.
Cameron's Avatar previously became the highest-grossing movie of all time and held that record from 2009-2019. Avengers: Endgame surpassed it in 2019, but Avatar later re-claimed the top spot following a theatrical re-release in 2021. After a re-release featuring new post-credits scenes, titled Avengers: Endgame Encore, the Marvel Cinematic Universe film is now once again the best performer in box office history, now at $2.938 billion worldwide compared to Cameron's movie at $2.923 billion.
On Instagram and other social media platforms, Cameron has now officially congratulated Avengers: Endgame Encore with an image featuring Iron Man surrounded by the Na'vi and being recognized by them as "one of the people." The filmmaker also wrote, "Congratulations to Marvel and the #1 Avengers: Endgame Encore for bringing moviegoers to the cinemas!" Check out the image below:
Cameron's reaction comes seven years after he congratulated Avengers: Endgame for initially breaking Avatar's box office record, writing at the time, "Oel natie kameie, I see you Marvel. Congratulations to Avengers: Endgame on becoming the new box-office king.” This was also accompanied by a crossover image, in this case Iron Man being surrounded by the woodsprite seeds of Pandora. He continues to champion record-breaking box office achievements and audiences going to theaters, even when it isn't for his own films.
No further re-releases for the two movies have been confirmed, although it is possible that Avatar will have one in 2029 for its 20th anniversary and ahead of the franchise's fourth film, which is slated to come out in theaters on December 21 of that year. This could once again give Avatar the all-time box office crown, as the re-releases have enabled it and Avengers: Endgame to continue swapping who owns the top spot.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which became the highest-grossing movie of 2026, also reached third place on the all-time box office chart at $2.513 billion. While this is an impressive feat and surpassed expectations, it still does not come close to Avengers: Endgame or Avatar. There have been reports of a Brand New Day re-release in the works, featuring footage of Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple and other scenes that were cut, a decision undoubtedly influenced by Avengers: Endgame Encore's success.
As for any upcoming movies that could break Avengers: Endgame's record, one possibility is Avengers: Doomsday, which releases in theaters on December 18. As of September 9, Disney announced that the movie has already set a domestic pre-sales ticket record of $50 million. That number will have continued to climb within the past month, and with this being the first new Avengers movie since Endgame, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and bringing back many beloved characters, it could surpass its predecessor and become the first movie to reach $3 billion globally.
The upcoming Avatar movies will surely be lucrative, but chances of surpassing Avengers: Endgame seem less likely given the franchise's box office trajectory. Avatar: The Way of Water made $2.334 billion worldwide, while Avatar: Fire and Ash earned $1.485 billion, with each of the films making substantially less than the one that came before it.
