Nations League: Liverpool, Man United Handed Injury Blows As Star Duo Forced Off

Liverpool and Manchester United’s injury woes could be set to intensify after Sunday’s Nations League action.

Both Cody Gakpo and Patrick Dorgu were forced off during the first half of their nations’ respective matches.

Gakpo was taken off just 17 minutes into the Netherlands’ clash with Serbia.

It comes after Alexander Isak left the Sweden camp to return to Merseyside early due to an injury.

According to talkSPORT, the Reds have confirmed the striker will be assessed by the club’s medical staff after scoring against Romania on Friday.

Fans will be hoping Gakpo will not be joining Isak on the treatment table in the coming days.

However, they face a nervy wait to discover the severity of the injury which ended his night early against Serbia.

Gakpo was on the end of a strong challenge from Sasa Lukic in the centre of the park just 12 minutes into the match in Belgrade.

Despite initially staying down after the foul, he appeared as if he would be able to continue, only to signal to the bench that he would have to come off moments later.

The 27-year-old was subsequently replaced by Ruben van Bommel in the 17th minute.

It did not appear to affect Xavi’s side, though, as they took the lead through a Mexx Meerdink penalty before half-time.

Gakpo has two goals and four assists in six appearances across all competitions so far this season for Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola’s side return to action at home to Manchester City on Sunday, October 11.

The Reds boss is already without long-term absentees Giovanni Leoni, Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley.

As for United, they face similar concerns over Dorgu after he lasted just over half an hour for Denmark against Wales.

The versatile full-back headed straight down the tunnel after limping off in the 31st minute to be replaced by Mohamed Daramy.

Dorgu’s injury follows the news that Bruno Fernandes will miss Portugal’s match on Sunday.

The Red Devils captain has been ruled out of his country’s trip to Norway due to injury.
