Indonesia seeks Swiss cooperation on water, energy, connectivity

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono pushed for stronger strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Switzerland to support the agendas of water security, energy security, and national connectivity.

"We see great potential for cooperation in three areas, namely integrated water and wastewater management; hydropower, energy storage, and strengthening energy systems; and low-carbon, resilient urban transportation and infrastructure," Yudhoyono said in a statement here on Wednesday.

According to him, cooperation in the water sector needs to be directed not only at technology but also at strengthening policy, governance, financing, institutional capacity, and human resource development.

"Water security is one of the main themes of my visit. We want to see how Switzerland's experience in research and technology, governance, operations, financing, and human resources can strengthen cooperation between the two countries," he said.

In the connectivity sector, Yudhoyono also pushed for stronger cooperation on low-carbon and resilient transportation infrastructure.

Switzerland's experience in transportation system integration and infrastructure management is expected to open up partnership opportunities relevant to Indonesia's connectivity agenda, including the development of national railway networks such as Trans Sumatra, Trans Kalimantan, and Trans Sulawesi.

"Indonesia welcomes quality, long-term Swiss investment. We are committed to an open, transparent, and predictable investment environment, and are ready to facilitate dialogue between Swiss partners and relevant institutions and businesses in Indonesia," Yudhoyono said.

Yudhoyono held a meeting with Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin in Bern, Switzerland. Parmelin expressed Switzerland's readiness to support further exploration in strategic development sectors.

Yudhoyono expressed hope that the bilateral talks could be realized into a number of priority initiatives, clear focal points, and concrete follow-up mechanisms between Indonesia and Switzerland.
