Why I embraced legal practice after 34 years in police — Ex-DIG Mba

L-R: Former Inspector General of Police Usman Baba; retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Frank Mba, Pastor Jerry Eze, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; at the birthday celebration of Mba and the unveiling of his law firm, Frank Mba Legal, marking his formal entry into legal practice following his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force, held at Frank Mba Legal office, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Frank Mba, has explained why he chose to establish a law firm after retiring from the Nigeria Police Force, saying he sees the move as an opportunity to continue serving society in a different capacity.

According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Sunday, Mba spoke during the unveiling of his law firm, Frank Mba Legal, in Wuse 2, Abuja, on Friday, October 9, 2026, which coincided with his birthday celebration.

The event attracted prominent personalities, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; former Inspectors-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar and Usman Baba; retired Deputy Inspectors-General of Police Sadiq Abubakar, Tijani Baba and Dan Kwara; and serving senior police officers.

Others present were the convener of New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations, Pastor Jerry Eze; Chairman of Chrome Group, Chief Emeka Offor; and members of the National Assembly.

Explaining his decision to venture into legal practice after 34 years in the police, Mba said his experience in leadership, discipline, conflict management and the administration of justice would be valuable in his new career.

“Retirement is not the end of service; it is an opportunity to serve in a different capacity. My years in the Nigeria Police Force provided me with invaluable experience in leadership, discipline, conflict management and the administration of justice. I intend to bring these lessons, alongside my legal training, into this new chapter,” he said.

He said the law was more than a profession, describing it as an instrument for protecting rights, resolving disputes and strengthening public confidence in institutions.

“For me, the law is not merely a profession; it is an instrument for protecting rights, resolving disputes, upholding justice and strengthening confidence in our institutions.

“At Frank Mba Legal, our ambition is to build a practice that clients can trust and that consistently upholds the highest standards of professional conduct,” he said.

Mba retired from the police in March 2026 after 34 years of service.

During his career, he served three times as the Force Public Relations Officer and also worked as the Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos State and Commissioner of Police in Ogun State.

He was also responsible for the Department of Training and Development as a member of the Force Management Team, contributing to the professional development of police personnel.

His transition to legal practice builds on his academic qualifications.

He obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Lagos, attended the Nigerian Law School, where he received an award, and earned a Master of Laws degree with distinction from the University of Dundee, Scotland.

He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002.

Mba also served with the Nigerian Police contingent to the United Nations Mission in Liberia from 2006 to 2007, earning a United Nations Medal for his service.
