The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has shifted from active oil spill response to monitoring operations after recovering oil-contaminated materials in the coastal waters of Mariveles, Bataan.

PCG on Saturday reported 1,660 kilograms of oil-contaminated materials inside 83 sacks were brought to a local transfer station in Mariveles for temporary storage.

These will be turned over to an accredited oily waste collector and treatment, storage and disposal facility.

On Friday, the Coast Guard said an oil spill affecting around 500 square meters of coastal waters was reported in the coastal waters of Sitio Naswe in Barangay Ipag, and found approximately 25 liters of used oil.

The PCG response team and the Mariveles Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported no visible oil sheen during a joint inspection of the waters surrounding the affected area. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/RF, GMA News
