Institutionalized through Iriga City Ordinance No. 2026-25, the annual celebration is held every October. This year’s event carried the theme “Empowering Indigenous Peoples: Strengthening Rights, Culture and Ancestral Domains” and coincided with Indigenous Peoples Month.
The celebration also marked National Indigenous Peoples Thanksgiving Day, observed every Oct. 29 in recognition of indigenous peoples’ culture, rights and contributions. The date commemorates the enactment of Republic Act No. 8371 (the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act) on Oct. 29, 1997. /jpv
