KORONADAL CITY — Police are investigating the discovery of a suspected improvised explosive fashioned from a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) among scrap metal delivered to a junk shop in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat, on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 3.

Police said a concerned citizen reported the discovery at about 2:30 p.m. at Quatro Scrap Metal Trading in Purok Saranay, Barangay San Pablo.

Responding police officers and an investigator immediately went to the junk shop and confirmed the presence of what appeared to be a component of an explosive device.

Initial investigation showed that Jomar Pangelamen Galay, 34, a resident of Barangay Tambak, Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat, had purchased scrap metals in Datu Paglas, Maguindanao del Sur. They transported the materials in sacks to the junk shop.

The suspected explosive was discovered only when workers opened the sacks of scrap metal at the junk shop, prompting them to seek police assistance.

The Tacurong City police station coordinated with the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Explosive and Canine Unit (SKPECU) for the identification, assessment, and proper handling of the suspected explosive.

The recovered device, initially described in the police report as a corroded, high-explosive improvised rocket-propelled grenade, is now in the custody of the SKPECU for proper disposition. /mcm
