Varquez to be installed as eighth bishop of Tagbilaran
TAGBILARAN CITY—Most Rev. Crispin Barrete Varquez, D.D., will be formally installed as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran on Oct. 27, nearly two decades after he was appointed bishop of Borongan.
The canonical possession and solemn installation will be held at 9 a.m. at the St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral Shrine-Parish in Tagbilaran City.
The 65-year-old Boholano prelate will succeed as shepherd of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, which was established in 1941.

The installation will be presided over by Most Rev. Alberto Uy, D.D., Archbishop of Cebu. Cardinal Jose Advincula, Archbishop of Manila, will deliver the homily, while Most Rev. Charles John Brown, D.D., Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, will also attend.

Born in Sevilla, Bohol, Varquez was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Tagbilaran on April 14, 1989, at age 28.
Before his appointment to the episcopate, he served as a formator at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Bohol for four years and at St. Augustine Major Seminary in Tagaytay for five years. He later held various diocesan posts, including vicar general of Tagbilaran.

In August 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Varquez bishop of Borongan. He was ordained to the episcopate at the Tagbilaran Cathedral on Oct. 18, 2007, and installed as bishop of Borongan on Nov. 8 that year.

Varquez has led the Diocese of Borongan for nearly two decades.
Within the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), he served two consecutive terms on its Permanent Council from 2013 to 2017. He also chaired the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Women for three terms from 2019 to 2025.

His installation will bring Varquez back to the Diocese of Tagbilaran, where he began his priestly ministry, as its eighth bishop. /mcm
