Indonesia surpasses Asian Games target with 39 medals: CdM

Nagoya, Japan (ANTARA) - Team Indonesia's Chef de Mission (CdM) Todotua Pasaribu said the Red and White contingent surpassed the medal target set by the Youth and Sports Ministry at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Indonesia ended its campaign at the Asian Games with 39 medals, consisting of five gold, 11 silver, and 23 bronze, surpassing the Ministry's target of four gold medals.

"Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God). As of today, after learning the total medals achieved, Team Indonesia has 39 medals, consisting of five gold, 11 silver, and 23 bronze. Of course, this is the best achievement," Pasaribu said in a statement here on Sunday.

The haul placed Indonesia 16th in the final standings of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. That position is lower than at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, when Indonesia ranked 12th with seven gold, 11 silver, and 18 bronze medals.

However, Pasaribu viewed the achievement in Aichi-Nagoya as worthy of appreciation because several events that previously produced Indonesia's gold medals were not contested at this year's Asian Games.

The 10-meter running target mixed and men's events, which contributed two golds in Hangzhou, for example, were not contested in Aichi-Nagoya. The same applied to the men's 1,000-meter dragon boat event.

Amid the changes in events, a number of Indonesian athletes recorded proud achievements and made history.

Weightlifter Rahmat Erwin recorded a total lift of 366 kilograms, making him the world record holder in the 75-kilogram class. In sport climbing, Desak Made set an Asian record in the women's speed event with a time of 6.062 seconds.

History was also made in badminton after Indonesia's men's team defeated China in the final. The result ended Indonesia's 28-year wait to win another Asian Games gold medal.

Meanwhile, Nurisa Dian Ashrifa made history in archery by becoming the first athlete to deliver an Asian Games gold medal for Indonesia in the sport.

Pasaribu also highlighted contributions from sports making their Asian Games debut, such as teqball, padel, mixed martial arts (MMA), and esports, which delivered silver and bronze medals for Indonesia.

Beyond the results, Pasaribu noted that the entire work process of the CdM team during the Asian Games will serve as material for evaluating the development of national sports.

"The rest we will report to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the ministry as a review for our national sports industry going forward," Pasaribu said.
