In a report, Pat. Abdul Khaliem Unda, of the Marawi City Police Station (MCPS), said police received a telephone call from a concerned citizen around 11:30 a.m. about a shooting incident in the village.

Responding personnel found the black Toyota Hilux driven by the victim with three bullet holes at the palace’s premises.

Initial police investigation indicated that the shooting stemmed from a long-standing land dispute involving Tomawis and Ali, which had reportedly resulted in a previous altercation between their respective children in October.

Personnel of the MCPS Alert Team, led by Lt. Col. Muhiddin Pagayawan, launched a pursuit operation that led to the arrest of Tomawis and Malic within the Haifa Palace compound, near the Petron gasoline station in Barangay Gadongan.
