Indonesia's BoP membership aims to support Palestine: Foreign Ministry

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said its participation in the Board of Peace (BoP) is part of efforts to support Palestine, particularly the recovery of the Gaza Strip.

"Our step is consistent, we are making efforts to support Palestine," ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said after a press briefing on Thursday.

He was responding to Amnesty International Indonesia's assessment that Indonesia's decision to join the BoP was a mistake.

Mulachela said Indonesia seeks to use all available channels to support Palestine, including the BoP, in the hope the board can help realize a two-state solution and Palestinian independence.

Involvement in the body is also meant to help ensure its agenda, particularly Gaza's recovery and Palestinian independence, aligns with the aspirations of Palestinians and the international community.

Asked about the BoP's latest activities, Mulachela said Indonesia was still suspending discussions within the organization.

Indonesia is also monitoring developments in the Middle East before deciding on further action at the BoP, he added.

Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid had said Indonesia could still withdraw from the BoP.

Hamid spoke on October 21 after an event in Jakarta themed "Supporting Palestinian Resistance in the Midst of Genocide" with UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese.

He said establishing the board was a mistake from the beginning.

"We agree that the BoP was a mistake from the start. It should not have happened from the start," Hamid said.

He argued that the BoP is dominated by the United States, which he considers a staunch supporter of Israel and its military operations that have killed large numbers of Palestinian civilians, including in Gaza.
