Bangkok home fire ends with man found dead, heavy weapons, and explosives recovered

BANGKOK — 25 September 2026, A man was found dead after allegedly setting fire to his family’s home, firing shots and triggering a major police operation in Bangkok’s Bang Phlat district on Thursday morning.

Police were called to the house after residents reported a fire and heard several gunshots. The man was reportedly armed inside the property and refused to surrender, prompting authorities to establish a 200-metre exclusion zone and evacuate nearby residents.

Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze while the man remained inside and reportedly fired shots at intervals. A SWAT team of more than 10 officers was deployed to surround the house as firefighters worked to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes.

The fire was brought under control after more than an hour. Officers later found the man dead on the second floor of the house, seated in a chair with a gun in his hand, according to initial reports.

Police also found numerous firearms, ammunition and objects believed to be explosive devices inside the property, including one in a room near where the man was found. Explosive ordnance disposal officers were called in to inspect and remove the items.

The man was identified as the son of a former military officer with the rank of major general. Police are investigating the circumstances of his death and the motive for the incident.
