"Absorbing" classic period drama that's "beautifully cast" is streaming now on ITV

Northanger Abbey, a TV movie adaptation of one of Jane Austen's classic novels, has got itself a new streaming home. The 86-minute drama, which originally aired in 2007 as part of ITV's Austen season, is now available on ITVX as of this week.

Plot-wise, we follow Gothic romance novel-obsessed Catherine Morland as she travels to Bath.

She soon becomes involved in a love triangle and relishes being the star of her own story, but will her overactive imagination get the better of her?

In terms of cast, we've got future Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Felicity Jones, and Carey Mulligan, the same year she appeared in the hugely-acclaimed Doctor Who episode 'Blink'.

The rest of the cast consists of Casualty's William Beck, Game of Thrones' Liam Cunningham, The Ruby in the Smoke's JJ Feild, Shetland's Catherine Walker and The Crown star Sylvestra Le Touzel.

While there aren't enough critic reviews for a Rotten Tomatoes score, there are over 18,000 user scores on IMDb, which led to an average score of 7.1/10.

One fan called it "beautifully cast" and that the TV movie itself was overall a "delightful adaptation, delivered with verve and spirit".

Another user review called it "absorbing" but did note that the source material didn't really have much of a plot, while others said it actually made some smart changes to the book.

"I've really enjoyed that adaptation. It's witty, charming and the necessary changes brought to the book narrative are clever and do not jar too much with the original," a further review reads.

A particularly-positive review called it a "thrilling and bang-up-to-date adaptation of a fantastic book", adding: "The cast performed extremely well, the direction was top class, and the narrative - though not always faithful to the book - was pretty much faultless."
