Porzingis to miss start of Warriors camp with 'health issue'

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Golden State Warriors will be without starting center Kristaps Porzingis to open training camp because of a "health issue," general manager Mike Dunleavy announced.

The Warriors are keeping the details private and calling Porzingis' absence indefinite. He will not travel with the team to Hawaii, meaning he will miss at least the first four practices and the preseason opener against the LA Clippers next Sunday in Honolulu.

"I'm not marking him down as being out to start the season or anything like that," Dunleavy said. "He's just not available this week."

This has been a recurring issue for Porzingis, who has missed a combined 90 games the last two regular seasons primarily because of a mysterious health problem that emerged after he experienced a prolonged upper respiratory viral illness while with the Boston Celtics in late February 2025.

Porzingis missed 10 of his first 11 games with the Warriors after they acquired him from the Atlanta Hawks at last February's deadline, but did return and appear in 16 of the final 21 games.

That, in part, motivated the Warriors to bring Porzingis back this summer on a two-year, $40 million deal, guaranteeing only $3 million in the second season to maintain flexibility next summer.

There was internal optimism about how Porzingis looked this summer. He was in the team's San Francisco facility and on the court in the last week and appeared to be cleared for training camp before Dunleavy received a call on Sunday night about Porzingis' latest health issue.

"He's been participating in everything," Dunleavy said. "It just kind of popped up."

The Warriors are already without starting wings Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody to enter the season. Both are in the middle stages of extended rehab for serious knee injuries.

"We feel comfortable with everything (about Porzingis' status)," Dunleavy said. "Disappointed that he won't be out there tomorrow, but it's early, so don't want to overreact to anything."
