The police in Imo State have arrested a 26-year-old man, Ifeanyi Chukwu, for allegedly pushing a 17-year-old girl from a two-storey building in the state.

The police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Mr Okoye, a deputy superintendent of police, said the suspect allegedly pushed the victim, Chiamaka Chukwuokore, from the building on Sunday in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

He said the victim was said to be the niece of the suspect’s unnamed girlfriend.

“The incident reportedly occurred on November 1, 2026, at about 1300 hours, following an alleged altercation between the suspect and the victim.

“The victim sustained serious injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is currently receiving medical attention and remains in critical condition,” he said.

Rescue from angry mob

The police spokesperson said an angry mob mobilised to lynch the suspect after the incident, but that police operatives promptly rescued him.

He said the suspect was subsequently taken into police custody.

PREMIUM TIMES sighted a video clip which showed three armed police operatives running to their waiting vehicle with the suspect in handcuffs while the angry mob pursued them vigorously until the suspect successfully entered the vehicle.

“The suspect is currently undergoing investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and facilitate necessary legal action,” Mr Ndukwe said.

He said police authorities in the state have urged residents, particularly social media users, to refrain from spreading unverified information about the incident.

“The public is advised to exercise restraint and rely on official sources for accurate updates,” he said.

Mr Ndukwe said the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Bosso, has assured residents of the state that the incident was being “thoroughly investigated.”

Mr Bosso added that all necessary steps would be taken to establish the facts and ensure that justice was served in accordance with the law.

The commissioner also appealed to the residents to remain calm, refrain from taking the law into their own hands and allow the police to carry out their duties professionally.

“Further developments will be communicated in due course,” he assured.
