The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) logged a minor phreatomagmatic eruption at the main crater of the Taal Volcano on Thursday.

According to a "24 Oras" report, the eruption lasted five minutes at Taal’s main crater. The crater of the volcano emitted black smoke, which reached 4,000 meters into the sky.

State volcanologists have retained Alert Level 1 over Taal Volcano.

A separate Facebook post from PHIVOLCS showed that there was also volcanic lightning in the black plume when the Taal Volcano erupted, which was recorded from the Buco and Calauit observation stations of Taal Volcano Network.

PHIVOLCS warned surrounding areas that there was a possibility of thin ash fall, particularly in the towns of Agoncillo, Lemery, San Nicolas, Taal, Batangas and adjacent areas.

For areas affected by ashfall, PHIVOLCS advised the public to remain calm.

In its guidelines for ash fall, the agency said that affected citizens could either wear a damp cloth or a gas mask.

After the ash fall, residents are advised to carefully clean their surroundings, as the ashes could be harmful to humans, animals, plants, and even structures. — Jean Mangaluz/BAP, GMA News
